Obama says path forward won't be quick or easy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Preaching patience, President Barack Obama urged voters Thursday night to stay optimistic that America can pull itself out of an economic rut.

"That hope has been tested," Obama said as he accepted his party's presidential nomination.

Eight years after he first addressed a Democratic national convention and rocketed into the political spotlight, Obama acknowledged that times had changed.

"So have I," he said.

The candidate who ran for the presidency four years ago on a platform of big ideas told voters he knew that this time around, the campaign seems small, even silly.

"Trivial things become big distractions. Serious issues become sound bites," he said. "And the truth gets buried under an avalanche of money and advertising."

Obama urged voters to stick with him even amid stubbornly high unemployment and even though solving many of the nation's toughest challenges will take a few years.
