ROME (AP) ? The British royal family faced a multinational battle to contain the spread of topless photos of Princess William's wife Kate, as an Irish tabloid published them Saturday and an Italian gossip magazine planned to do the same despite the threat of legal action.

The royal couple's St. James's Palace office condemned the moves as unjustifiable and evidence of pure greed, and said it was considering "all proportionate responses."

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge sued French magazine Closer on Friday after it ran the photos, taken while Kate and William were on vacation at a relative's private estate in southern France last month.

The publication has been roundly condemned by British newspapers, which refrained from publishing them out of respect for the young couple's privacy, even though tabloids like The Sun run topless women every day on page 3 and ran pictures of Prince Harry naked in Las Vegas last month.

The British media, wary about an ongoing media ethics inquiry triggered by revelations of illegal phone hackling and other intrusive newspaper behavior, has generally respected palace guidelines stressing that William and Kate should not be photographed when they are not in public.

But across the Irish Sea, the Dublin-based Irish Daily Star ran a blurry reproduction of the pages from Closer over two inside pages Saturday.

Editor Mike O'Kane told the BBC the photos weren't included in the edition distributed in Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. And the newspaper's website came up as "temporarily unavailable" Saturday.

O'Kane defended his newspaper, saying that Ireland did not view the royal family the same way as the British.

"She's not our future queen," he told the BBC. "The duchess would be no different to any other celeb pics we would get in, for example Rihanna or Lady Gaga."

Northern and Shell, the British company that co-owns the Irish Daily Star ? and publishes its British sister tabloid, the Daily Star ? said it was "profoundly dismayed" the Dublin newspaper had run the pictures. It said it had had no control over the decision.

In Italy, gossip magazine Chi, which is owned by former Premier Silvio Berlusconi, said it planned to publish a 26-page spread with the photos on Monday, although it wasn't clear if the content was any different from what Closer ran.

Chi is part of Berlusconi's publishing empire Mondadori, which also owns Closer.

The Chi cover, featuring three pictures of a topless princess, was unveiled Saturday in Italian newspapers and television under the headline "Court Scandal: The Queen is Nude!"

In an interview Saturday with The Associated Press, Chi editor Alfonso Signorini said he didn't fear legal action since the photos were already in the public domain following Closer's publication.

"Closer's position is different, they were the first ones to publish," he said.

He defended the decision to publish them in Italy, saying the photos are tasteful and respect Kate's dignity.

"I don't see anything morbid or damaging in them," he said. "Chi pays attention to respecting people's dignity. I don't think they hurt Kate's image."

He added in a statement that the pictures actually were in line "with the modern concept of the monarchy."

"It shows in its total naturalness the daily life of a young, famous, modern couple in love," he said.

A spokeswoman at St. James's Palace said royal officials were reviewing "all proportionate responses" to Chi's planned publication.

The spokeswoman, who spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with palace policy, said publication of the photos served no purpose "other than to cause further, entirely unjustifiable upset to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who were enjoying time alone together in the privacy of a relative's home."

The blurry photos, called a "grotesque" abuse of privacy by royal officials after they were published Friday by Closer, show Kate - the Duchess of Cambridge - wearing only a skimpy bikini bottom and sunglasses.

In one of the three on Chi's cover, she appears to be rubbing suntan lotion on William's shoulder.

Palace officials compared the intrusion on the young couple's privacy to the tragic paparazzi pursuit of William's mother Princess Diana, which many believe was a contributing factor to her early death in a car crash in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997.

That two magazines in Berlusconi's media empire were responsible for the distribution of the images of a topless Kate is remarkable, given the former premier's own problems with paparazzi and his privacy.

In 2009, he threatened legal action against the Spanish newspaper El Pais after it published photos of topless women and a naked man lounging at his Sardinian estate. Italian prosecutors seized the photos and placed the photographer under investigation for alleged violation of privacy.

The photos came to light at the start of Berlusconi's downfall: They were published amid a scandal involving Berlusconi and a Naples model, whose 18th birthday party the then-premier attended.

Berlusconi, who was forced from office in November after financial markets lost faith in his ability to steer Italy out of its debt crisis, is currently on trial in Milan on charges he paid for sex with an underage Moroccan girl and then used his office to try to cover it up. He denies wrongdoing, and both he and the girl say they didn't have sex.

White Sox blank Twins

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Chris Sale threw six scoreless innings to notch his 17th victory after being rained out the night before, helping the Chicago White Sox keep their one-game AL Central lead by beating the Minnesota Twins 6-0 on Friday.

Sale (17-6) scattered three singles and struck out five without a walk, cruising to his third win in three starts against the Twins this year.

Sale was supposed to pitch on Thursday at home against Detroit, but the last matchup of the season between the two division front-runners was postponed until Monday by the wet weather. The Tigers, who beat Cleveland 4-0, are one game back in the race.

Dayan Viciedo had two RBIs, Kevin Youkilis homered and Alex Rios doubled, scored and drove in a run for the White Sox, who played without injured slugger Adam Dunn for the seventh straight game. Dunn, who has a strained right oblique muscle, could return to the lineup on Saturday.

The White Sox improved to 12-4 against the Twins this year. But they're just 5-12 against the Tigers, with losses in nine of the last 10 meetings. Both teams have fallen well behind in the AL wild-card standings, leaving the division title their only real opportunity to play in the postseason.

With 19 games remaining, the White Sox play legitimate contenders only eight more times including the pivotal makeup game on Monday. They can't afford to slip up against faded foes like the Twins, who are jostling with the Indians for fourth place.

Sale made sure they didn't, letting only two runners reach second base. Youkilis helped him out at third base with consecutive catches of hard line drives, going down on the ground to his right to snag Jamey Carroll's and then gloving Josh Willingham's on the next play.

Sale, whose transition from reliever to starter this year has been a rousing success, lowered his ERA to 2.78. He's third in the AL in ERA and tied for second in wins.

Esmerling Vasquez (0-2) gave the Twins the best of his three starts since he was brought up from Triple-A Rochester at the beginning of the month, but he was done in again by control problems. He walked three straight batters in the fourth inning after a one-out single, with Viciedo's walk forcing in the second run for Chicago.

Then with two outs in the sixth, after a broken-bat single by A.J. Pierzynski and a walk to Viciedo, Kyle Waldrop relieved Vasquez. Alexei Ramirez greeted him with a single to make it 3-0.

Vasquez had 80 walks over 137 innings, all in relief, for Arizona over the last three seasons. The Twins claimed him on waivers last September. The 28-year-old Dominican needed 113 pitches to make it 5 2-3 innings. He walked five and struck out four, with three hits and three runs allowed.

NOTES: LHP Francisco Liriano (5-11, 5.37 ERA) will pitch on Saturday against his former team so the White Sox can give starters Jose Quintana and Gavin Floyd extra rest. Liriano has been bouncing back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen. RHP Samuel Deduno (6-3, 3.55 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Twins, coming off a strong start on Monday when he beat the Indians with seven innings, six strikeouts and three hits, two runs and three walks allowed. ... Joe Mauer missed his fourth straight game due to back spasms, but the Twins said he's feeling better. With Ryan Doumit also day to day with a strained rib cage, Chris Herrmann was called up from Double-A New Britian to be the emergency catcher. ... White Sox manager Robin Ventura said when Dunn returns Dewayne Wise will be in the mix with Viciedo and Alejandro De Aza for time in LF and CF.

U.S. says two former Navy SEALS also died in Libya attack

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday identified two additional victims of this week's deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, as former Navy SEALS who died trying to protect their colleagues.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty died in Tuesday's assault on the Benghazi consulate, which also killed U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and Sean Smith, a State Department information management officer.

"Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest gratitude are with their families and friends. Our embassies could not carry on our critical work around the world without the service and sacrifice of brave people like Tyrone and Glen," Clinton said in a statement.

The statement identified both Woods and Doherty as former Navy SEALS with lengthy experience in Iraq and Afghanistan. It did not say in what capacity they were working in Benghazi.

"I am enormously proud of the men and women who risk their lives every day in the service of our country and our values. They help make the United States the greatest force for peace, progress, and human dignity that the world has ever known," Clinton said in her statement.

U.S. officials had confirmed that Stevens and Smith died in the attack, but said they could not confirm the identities of the two other victims pending notification of their families.

Three other U.S. personnel were wounded in Tuesday's attack, which took place amid a wave of anti-U.S. protests across the Middle East against a low-budget, anti-Islam film produced in the United States.

U.S. President Barack Obama has vowed to work with Libyan officials to seek justice for those responsible for the Benghazi attack, which presented Obama with a new foreign policy crisis less than two months before he seeks re-election.

The U.S. Navy's SEAL (Sea, Air and Land) teams are among the most storied of U.S. special operations forces.

Doherty's family, through a public relations firm, had released information about him, including comments from friends.

"Don't feel sorry for him, he wouldn't have it," wrote Brandon Webb, who identified himself as a former SEAL and friend of Doherty's.

"He died serving with men he respected, protecting the freedoms we enjoy as Americans and doing something he loved."

ABC News interviewed Doherty last month. At the time, he said he was working with the State Department on an intelligence mission to round up shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles and destroy them, according to an ABC News report.

Make Fluffier, Souffle-Like Pancakes [Food Hacks]

Make Fluffier, Souffle-Like PancakesThe secret to extra airy and fluffy pancakes? According to an executive chef at a restaurant in Baltimore's Four Seasons Hotel, it's all about the eggs?and lots of them.

Chef Clayton Miller of the Wit and Wisdom tavern folds in extra whipped egg whites. His trick for the fluffiest pancakes ever involves gently folding in three whipped egg whites to the batter?which already has two whole eggs and two egg yolks.

The result is "souffl? pancakes" that are light and airy like souffl?s (without being temperamental).

First images of chemical bond differences captured

Sharing more leads to tighter bonds ? even in the world of molecules. The most detailed images yet made of the chemical bonds in a molecule vividly show what large-scale models had long assumed: the more electrons two atoms share, the shorter the bond. Bonds that are more electron-dense also appear brighter in the new images.

In molecules, the atoms can share one or more of their outermost electrons in a covalent bond. Whether they share two, four or six electrons determines the bond's strength, which is an important factor in predicting the molecule's geometry, stability and reactivity.

The new pictures, taken with a modified atomic force microscope, marks the first time that scientists have been able to observe the true physical differences between these bond types, which could give a deeper understanding of chemical reactions. It may also help researchers size up molecules for use as electrical components in tiny circuits.

"We have seen bonds before, but we could not differentiate between bonds," says Leo Gross of IBM Research in Zurich, Switzerland. "Now we can image these very tiny differences between different bonds. This is really exciting to me."

Buckyball portrait

In 2009, Gross and colleagues imaged the individual bonds between the atoms of a molecule for the first time. They used a type of atomic force microscopy, in which a vibrating needle-like tip is scanned over a surface, and differences in vibrational frequency due to the presence of electrons below are recorded at different spots. The result was a picture of the bonds linking the carbon and hydrogen atoms that make up the flat molecule pentacene.

But though the team noticed that some of the bonds looked brighter and longer than others, they weren't sure if they were seeing true physical differences, or just artefacts of the imaging process.

Now they have used the same technique to image buckyballs, cage-like molecules made of 60 carbon atoms each. They also imaged two flat molecules, hexabenzocoronene and DBNP, which were synthesised specially for the imaging.

Structural symmetry in these carbon-containing molecules let the researchers distinguish actual differences in their bonds from background effects caused by the imaging method.

In addition to differences in brightness, Gross and colleagues found that bonds that are more electron-dense actually appear shorter than bonds that share fewer electrons ? though only by a few picometres, or 10-12 of a metre.

Molecular transistor

Gross is most interested in using the imaging technique to ask fundamental questions about the way bond type influences the properties of a molecule. For example, questions such as "What happens to the rest of the bonds in a chain of carbon rings if you pinch a hydrogen atom off the end?" are very difficult to address unless you can resolve small differences between bonds.

The findings could also have applications in molecular electronics, a potential future version of electronics where individual molecules serve as transistors and switches.

"The ability to determine fundamental properties of individual chemical bonds could affect many technologically relevant fields," writes Ruben Perez of the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain, who was not involved in the work, in an accompanying article.

TalentBin Launches A Mobile People Search App Called Lookup

anthonyha lookupBack in May, TalentBin (formerly Honestly.com) launched a people search engine for recruiters. Now it's releasing that search engine in iPhone app form, aimed at a different audience ? not recruiters, but pretty much anyone who's ever wanted to look up someone else. The underlying data in the search engine is pretty much the same, with profile information and activity aggregated from social networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and Quora (data that CEO Peter Kazanjy has called "professional exhaust"). But just by moving the search onto a mobile phone, Kazanjy says the use case changes, which is why the app is called Lookup, not TalentBin.

Nats win as Harper has 1st 4-hit game

By MIKE FITZPATRICK

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:55 p.m. ET Sept. 11, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Bryce Harper had looked so bad all season against R.A. Dickey's dancing knuckleball that he didn't even expect to play Tuesday night.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson had a different idea.

Harper had his first four-hit game and pinch-hitter Tyler Moore launched a go-ahead homer off Dickey in the seventh inning to send Washington past the punchless New York Mets 5-3.

After entering 0 for 10 with six strikeouts against Dickey, Harper doubled and singled twice off the All-Star pitcher. The talented rookie added an RBI single in the ninth off Josh Edgin to become the first teenager with four hits in a major league game since Andruw Jones did it for Atlanta on Sept. 22, 1996.

"Now he realizes he can hit a knuckleball," Johnson said.

Leadoff batter Jayson Werth reached base all five times for the NL East leaders, who have won seven straight and 11 of 12 at Citi Field.

Harper credited Werth's fine at-bats in front of him for helping him solve Dickey. Werth is 13 for 27 (.481) with two homers, three doubles and five walks against Dickey - attributing his success to all the Wiffle Ball he played as a kid.

"Just trying to see something up or see a pitch I can square up," Harper said. "I've tried everything against that guy."

Looking for a win over baseball's top team to boost his Cy Young Award resume, Dickey (18-5) mostly pitched out of trouble for seven solid innings. But he gave up a two-run shot to Moore that made it 3-2 in the seventh and was unable to tie Nationals lefty Gio Gonzalez for the major league lead in wins.

Gonzalez beat the Mets 5-1 in the series opener Monday.

Not surprisingly, Dickey got little help from his teammates at the plate. The fading Mets, losers of five in a row and seven of eight, set a club record by failing to score more than three runs for the 12th consecutive home game. The last time they managed four runs at Citi Field was Aug. 12 in a 6-5 win over Atlanta.

New York has dropped 21 of its last 25 in Queens and is 0-5 on a six-game homestand against Atlanta and Washington. The Nationals improved to 13-4 against the Mets this season.

Tom Gorzelanny (4-2) worked a hitless sixth in relief of a shaky Jordan Zimmermann, who labored through 104 pitches over five innings. Christian Garcia struck out three of his four batters and Tyler Clippard allowed a solo homer to pinch-hitter Scott Hairston in the ninth before securing his 31st save in 34 attempts.

Kurt Suzuki also had an RBI single in the ninth for Washington (88-54).

"That's the best lineup I've faced. They're just so functional," Dickey said.

After going an absurd 110 straight innings at home without scoring more than one run, the Mets finally put up a crooked number in the fifth.

Ruben Tejada singled for the third time and scored easily from first when Daniel Murphy's slicing double took an odd carom off the retaining wall in medium left field. Murphy clapped his hands at second base, Dickey cheered from the dugout and then David Wright grounded an RBI single under the glove of a diving Ian Desmond at shortstop.

Suddenly given a 2-1 lead, Dickey soon gave it back. Suzuki singled with one out in the seventh and Moore drove the next pitch to left for his ninth home run in 138 at-bats this season.

"I had a mediocre knuckleball and had to pitch with it," Dickey said. "At this point in the season, you want to give the fans something. We've got a shot at doing something, maybe."

Harper shortened his big swing against Dickey, hitting the ball on the ground all four times. After fouling off a bunt attempt, the 19-year-old slugger chopped a double inside third base to set up Ryan Zimmerman's sacrifice fly in the first.

"I think I was fortunate to get a couple knocks tonight," Harper said. "You can't really get any advice on that guy. He's got a knuckleball. That's what he throws. You either hit it or you don't."

Johnson smiled in the dugout after Harper's third hit. Before the game, he explained his decision to start the youngster.

"He's going to have to learn how to hit a knuckleball. It's too early to be dodging anybody," Johnson said. "Bryce has had a day off and he doesn't need one. He's stronger and younger than anybody out there. And that knuckleball might find his bat. It may take a wrong little knuckle and go right into his bat, and I know he's going to be swinging hard enough, it could cause some damage. So I'm willing to take that chance and have him in the lineup."

Zimmerman became the first Nationals player with an RBI in eight consecutive games. He also singled in the eighth, extending his hitting streak to 15 games.

In a tradition that began after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the Mets wore caps commemorating the NYPD, FDNY and other first responders during batting practice and the national anthem.

The Nationals wore their special blue game jerseys with stars and stripes, and both teams lined up along the baselines for a moment of silence before the first pitch.

NOTES: Johnson plans to give LF Michael Morse (sore right hand) a couple of days off. ... LHP Sean Burnett (elbow) could be available Wednesday. ... Johnson said he met New York quarterbacks Eli Manning and Mark Sanchez at a charity function near the World Trade Center site Tuesday morning. "It's just a great cause," the manager said. "It was nice to be there." ... It was Moore's second pinch-hit home run. ... Nationals LHP John Lannan, from nearby Long Beach, will make his first start at Citi Field since April 2010 when he faces Mets rookie Matt Harvey in the series finale Wednesday night.

Frank Sesno to Moderate National Forum on Disability Issues

President Barack Obama, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney invited to present their policy positions on disability issues Sept. 28 in Columbus, Ohio

WASHINGTON, Sept. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Frank Sesno, director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at the George Washington University, and former CNN White House correspondent, anchor and Washington bureau chief, is serving as moderator of the National Forum on Disability Issues (NFDI) from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 28, at the Hyatt Regency in Columbus, Ohio.

The non-partisan forum aims to bring together President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and provide them with a platform to present their policy positions on disability issues directly to the disability community. Invitations have also been extended to candidates from both parties for the U.S. Senate from Ohio, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D) and Republican nominee Treasurer Josh Mandel.

"This is the only national event for candidates to present their positions on disability issues," said Sue Hetrick, director of public policy of the Ability Center of Greater Toledo and coordinator of the Ohio Disability Vote Coalition. "There are more than 57 million people with disabilities in the United States, and one in four veterans returning from service in Iraq and Afghanistan are returning with a disability. The disability community, which is growing and increasing its influence on elections, must know the policy positions of the people who will represent them in Washington."

Format of the Forum

Each candidate will occupy the stage exclusively for 30-minutes. During that time, he will have 10 minutes to present his vision for the future on disability policy in America and 20 minutes to respond to questions presented by Sesno. Questions for the session are being generated by the disability community prior to the event. Each candidate has the opportunity to address such topics as employment, health care, long-term community-based services and supports, education, transportation, housing, and research.

A maximum capacity crowd of 500 Americans living with disabilities is expected to be confirmed, while thousands more are planned to participate via a live webcast. Individuals interested in registering for the forum or live webcast can do so at www.nfdi.org.

NEW YORK (AP) ? McDonald's said a key sales figure climbed 3.7 percent in August, as the fast-food chain emphasized the value of its menu offerings amid the challenging global economy.

The world's biggest hamburger chain's strongest performance came from the region encompassing Asia, the Middle East and Africa, with revenue at stores open at least 13 months up 5.7 percent.

The Oak Brook, Ill.-based company said strong results in Australia and China fueled the performance, along with a shift in the timing of Ramadan.

In the U.S., the company said its breakfast menu and value items pushed up sales by 3 percent. In Europe, the figure rose 3.1 percent as a result of strength in the U.K., France and Russia.

McDonald's says the results were offset by weakness in Japan, Germany and parts of southern Europe.

Sales at all the company's restaurants rose 1.2 percent for the month.

The increase in August follows a disappointing showing in July, when the figure came in flat. That was the worst showing in more than nine years; the last time the figure dipped for McDonald's was in April 2003.

After years of outperforming its rivals, analysts say McDonald's could be heading into a period of slower growth. The company is also facing increasing competition, with Burger King Worldwide Inc. and The Wendy's Co. working to revive their brands.

Revenue in restaurants open at least 13 months is a key measure of a restaurant chain's performance because it strips out the impact of recently opened or closed stores. The figure is a snapshot of money spent on food at both company-owned and franchised restaurants. They do not reflect corporate revenue.

Shares of McDonald's Corp. rose 70 cents at $91.30 in premarket trading Tuesday.

Romney: US 'united' in effort to halt terrorism

ADDISON, Ill. (AP) ? Mitt Romney says the United States is indeed a united nation in its determination to halt terrorists and to protect freedom "at home and across the world."

The Republican presidential nominee issued a written statement marking 11 years since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on America. Romney was to address the anniversary in a speech to the National Guard in Reno, Nev., later Tuesday, a rare day in which the presidential race will not feature overt campaigning.

In his statement, Romney said the United States will never forget those who died or stop caring for their families. He expressed thanks to U.S. troops and warned those who would attack America that "we are united, one nation under God, in our determination to stop them."

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Stock ...

When you're a newbie, securities dealing can feel like a dismaying prospect. If you're wary and smart with your investments, you have got no reason to be fearful. There are lots of choices to make on the way, but do not let them scare you.

Bill lost half his trading account in a case of days. Perching in front of his PC screen was now a pain and he probably did that most of the day as he observed the market ?fire it?s bullets. ? The knot in his stomach and the tightness in his chest, continued companions. Those untroubled days were now days crammed with stress and frantic feelings.

He continued to trade and as he was trading under duress, more losses were amassing. Picking the ?gainers? and avoiding the ?losers? is the name of the game. Warren Buffett knows this idea well, and that made him the second-richest man in the world today. What if you had a technique to tell which stocks are intending to make a slaughtering in the market? Spot the ?gainers? earlier without depending on brokers or untrustworthy insider information. Now would not that give you the benefit easily? What if androids can do all of that for you? These are what automated stock dealing robotic systems do best.

The nice thing about the stockmarket dealing software is the undeniable fact that they're programmed to recognise the trends and warn you of which stocks are probably going to be good to make an investment in. * There are new technologies out there now that may considerably raise the probability for successful stock market dealing. If you're think about making an investment in a stockmarket dealing software then it might be to your benefit to learn all you are able to about the numerous type and the benefits and drawbacks of every one before purchasing one. They're also comparatively cheap and easy to utilize.

Fenceline Weaning Reduces Stress, Improves Performance ? Eagle ...

Fenceline Weaning Reduces Stress, Improves Performance

By Larry Hollis, DVM, M.Ag.

There are many things we do with beef calves that can cause stress. And, we know all too well that stress affects performance. Stress can even suppress the immune system and lead to health problems, especially respiratory disease.

But, weaning is one procedure that doesn?t have to be a major stressor in the calf?s life. Our industry is rapidly learning that low-stress weaning makes a significant difference in how much calves gain and how well they perform.

There are multiple ways to wean. Some are abrupt (hard weaning), others more gradual (soft weaning). Hard weaning methods immediately separate calves from their mothers, including putting unweaned calves on the truck or in a pen or dry lot until they stop bawling. We also hard wean when we sort calves off and move them into a new pasture.

Soft weaning methods prevent nursing, but still allow the calf to have contact with the cow. Nose clips and fenceline weaning are the two most common soft weaning techniques. Plastic nose clips, attached to the calf?s nose, have a flap that prevents the calf from getting the cow?s teat in its mouth; some also ?stick? the cow so that she moves away when the calf tries to suckle. With fenceline weaning, cows are moved into an adjacent pasture and calves are left in their ?home? pasture, allowing them to go nose-to-nose and do everything except nurse.

When you look at the various weaning methods, soft weaning methods clearly create less stress for the calf and should be employed whenever feasible and appropriate for the operation. Specifically, research has revealed that fenceline weaning comes closest to replicating the performance of the pre-weaned calves in terms of how much time they spend resting and eating, as well as how much they gain at 2 weeks and at 10 weeks.

So, for producers who have the resources to introduce fenceline weaning, I highly recommend it. It?s less stressful than even the nose-clip method, which requires putting calves through a chute twice to insert and remove the clips.

To implement fenceline weaning, you do have to make sure you have a calf-proof fence because the calves will, of course, try to get to their mothers. And, you must have adequate pasture space, which may be an issue for some smaller operations.

Nevertheless, the advantages of fenceline weaning are clear. Calves are less stressed, have better gains and enjoy better health than those weaned in other ways. Of the producers I know who have tried fenceline weaning, none have gone back to previous methods.

Larry Hollis is extension beef veterinarian and professor of beef cattle management and nutrition at Kansas State University.

9th prisoner dies at Guantanamo; cause under study

(AP) ? Another prisoner has died at the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the U.S. military said Monday, two days after the man was apparently found unconscious in his cell at the isolated, high-security prison.

Guards administered first aid to the prisoner before he was rushed to a base hospital, where he was declared dead "after extensive lifesaving measures had been performed," the U.S. military's Southern Command said in a brief statement.

The prisoner's name and nationality were not released. But U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release his identity, said he was from Yemen.

Experts have yet to determine what caused the early-afternoon death since there were no obvious signs, said Navy Capt. Robert Durand, a spokesman for the prison.

"We haven't ruled in or out anything," Durand said. "There is no apparent cause, natural or self-inflicted."

The prisoner was the ninth detainee to die at the facility since it was opened in January 2002 to hold men suspected of terrorism or links to al-Qaida and the Taliban. The military has said two of the previous deaths were by natural causes and six were declared suicides.

Former prisoner Moazzam Begg, now director of the advocacy group Cageprisoners, said the death underscores the bleak outlook for the 167 men held at Guantanamo.

"Almost 11 years since the camp opened few people are concerned whether the men are imprisoned or free, whether they live or die," said Begg, a British citizen who was released in 2005.

The latest death occurred in Camp 5, a section of the prison used mostly to hold prisoners who have broken detention center rules.

This prisoner had recently splashed a guard with what military officials call a "cocktail," typically a mixture of food and bodily fluids, which is why he was on disciplinary status, Durand said.

He was on a hunger strike earlier this year but stopped it on June 1 and was at 95 percent of his ideal body weight and 14 pounds heavier than when he came to Guantanamo, the spokesman said.

Prisoners at Guantanamo include a handful charged with war crimes, including five accused of helping carry out the Sept. 11 terror attack on the U.S. More than half the population has been cleared for release, but the government says it is has been unable to find stable countries to transfer them to.

Military officials have significantly improved conditions for detainees who don't break prison rules, such as providing them with classes and satellite television in a communal section known as Camp 6. But conditions are stark in Camp 5 and a nearby disciplinary annex known as Camp 5 Echo. Both are akin to a maximum-security U.S. prison, the men spending much of each day enclosed in solid-walled cells.

Wells Dixon, a lawyer who has represented a number of Guantanamo prisoners, said the sense of despair among prisoners overall seems to have worsened since the Supreme Court announced in June that it would not review the way courts were handling the men's individual challenges to their confinement.

"The mood is very dark," Dixon said. "There are a lot of guys who are having a really hard time ... Many of them have lost any hope that they are ever going to be released regardless of their status."

Durand, the prison spokesman, said the man who died Saturday had not been charged and was not designated for prosecution.

A medical examiner was sent to the base to determine the exact cause of death, and an investigation will be conducted by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which is standard in the death of detainees at Guantanamo. Southern Command will also review the incident to determine how it occurred and whether any internal policies need to be addressed.

Durand said the U.S. government was working to notify the man's family and his country before releasing his name and nationality.

"Certainly we don't want the family finding out in the media before they have been notified," he said.

A mortuary team washed and placed the body in a shroud in accordance with Islamic burial rites for shipment to the prisoner's homeland.

The most recent death was in April 2011, when a 37-year-old Afghan prison died in an apparent suicide. His lawyer told The Associated Press at the time that the man had a long-term mental illness and had tried to kill himself at least once before. Two Saudis and a Yemeni prisoner were found hanging in their cells in June 2006 in what the military determined was a coordinated suicide.

Primarily Speaking: All About Me...Success!

What. A. Week.? Four day weeks are both a blessing and a curse.? You know what I'm talking about, you get a day off to relax but then you only have 4 days to plan/prep for the following week.? Needless to say, my 31 bag is full of things to cut and glue before Monday rolls around.

This week we worked on our All About Me unit.? It's a mini writing unit that I designed to ease writers back into the writing process.

Writing can be challenging and most students don't do a whole lot of it over the summer.? So, to help my students feel confident and successful upon returning to school, I created three organizers (two are shown) and two fill in the blank writing topics to ease them into narrative writing.

This is one of the organizers that we completed.? I had them write more facts about themselves on the back.? Surprisingly, many of the kids did not know where they were born.? Don't parents tell their kids this kind of stuff?

I love this organizer.? Not only are they brainstorming, but they are also classifying information. By the way, I wish my handwriting was this nice.

?This is the "When I Grow Up" fill in the blank writing page.? They did really well completing their pages.? I love that this girl wants to make a lot of money...I do too.

This is the other fill in the blank writing page (first and third grade versions are also included in the unit).? We used this as a rough draft and the next day the students copied the entire paragraph onto a new piece of paper (no prompts) so that we could hang it on our hallway bulletin board.? This boy wants to be a nerd...love it!

Once the students completed these pages (over the course of several days), they were tasked with writing a "group" of sentences about themselves.? I'm not using the term "paragraph" just yet.

Before I had the kids begin their writing, I modeled how to do this by writing my own group of sentences.? I wrote a paragraph about myself and pointed out the use of topic sentence, some details, and a concluding sentence.? I didn't necessarily focus on these terms, but I did use them.? I mostly explained each part and its purpose and then quizzed the kids before I let them loose.
??

?

The students did great with this writing assignment.? They all had a topic sentence and details.? Most had a concluding sentence, but a few did not.? That is usually a toughie for second graders and I'm not holding it against them at this point.? I think the subject matter also helped too.? They know a lot about themselves and they had spent several days classifying and brainstorming information that would be helpful.

There is also an art component to this unit.? I had the students paint a watercolor portrait.? I have had my students do this every year because they turn out great and I love looking at them every day!? I hang them below my whiteboard and the kids take them home at the end of the year.

?This year, as I was hanging them up, I literally stopped in my tracks when I got to this painting.? It is amazing! And, being a life long freckle girl myself (had them ever since I was a tot), I am in love with her red freckles. ?
I was pretty excited when I created this unit, and now that I have used it with my class, I am excited to use it again next year.? In fact, I already have some ideas for changing it up a bit.? Some users have reported that they used the materials to create individual student books.? What a great idea!? I actually used mine in pieces, but definitely will assemble it as a whole book next year.? This is why feedback is so great!!

Check back this week as I plan to share some part/part/whole activities we used in class.

Romney reports raising $111 million in August

BOSTON (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's campaign is reporting it raised $111 million in August to fund his challenge of President Barack Obama.

It's the third straight month the former Massachusetts governor has raised more than $100 million. The figure represents his best one-month fundraising total.

Obama, however, edged out Romney, raising $114 million toward his re-election campaign. However, Romney has socked away more money for the general election campaign.

Obama is reversing a three-month trend at the time he needs it most, having spent heavily over the summer on advertising in an attempt to keep Romney at bay.

Both candidates are claiming momentum coming out of their national conventions over the past two weeks.

(AP) ? A teenage suicide bomber blew himself up outside NATO headquarters in the Afghan capital on Saturday, killing at least six civilians in a strike that targeted the heart of the U.S.-led military operation in the country, officials said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the blast, which was the latest in a series of insurgent attacks in the heavily-fortified Afghan capital aimed at undercutting a months-long campaign by the U.S.-led coalition to shore up security in Kabul before a significant withdrawal of combat troops limits American options.

While bombings and shootings elsewhere in Afghanistan often receive relatively little attention, attacks in the capital score propaganda points for the insurgents by throwing doubt on the government's ability to provide security even the seat of its power. The attacks also aim to undermine coalition claims of improving security ahead of the planned withdrawal of foreign troops by the end of 2014.

The bomber struck just before noon Saturday outside the headquarters of the U.S.-led NATO coalition, on a street that connects the alliance headquarters to the nearby U.S. and Italian embassies, a large U.S. military base and the Afghan Defense Ministry.

The alliance and police said all of the dead were Afghans, and the Ministry of Interior said some were street children. Kabul police said in a statement that the bomber was 14 years old.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the target was a U.S. intelligence facility nearby.

German Brig. Gen. Gunter Katz, the spokesman for the U.S.-led international military alliance, said there were no coalition casualties.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi blamed the attack on the Haqqani network, one of the most dangerous militant groups fighting U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan. He did not say what he was basing that conclusion on, but the Haqqani group, which is linked to both the Taliban and al-Qaida, has been responsible for several high-profile attacks in the Afghan capital in the past.

On Friday, the U.S. designated the Pakistan-based Haqqani network a terrorist organization, a move that bans Americans from doing business with members of the group and blocks any assets it holds in the United States.

The Obama administration went forward with the decision despite misgivings about how the largely symbolic act could further stall planned Afghan peace talks or put yet another chill on the United States' already fragile counterterrorism alliance with Pakistan.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mijahid said the decision will have no impact on the war against the Afghan government and U.S.-led forces, and added that the Haqqanis were part of the Taliban and not a separate group. He said its founder, Jalaluddin Haqqani, was a loyal member of the Taliban leadership council and a "person of trust" to the movement's leader, Mullah Mohammed Omar.

"It will not have a negative effect on our struggle and we are rejecting this announcement," Mujahid said in an email.

The Haqqani network has been blamed for a series of high profile attacks against foreign targets in Kabul, including coordinated attacks last April against NATO and government facilities that lasted more than a day before the insurgents were killed. A year ago, they were blamed for a rocket-propelled grenade assault on the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters. In June, gunmen stormed a lakeside hotel near Kabul and 18 people in a 12-hour rampage.

American officials estimate the Haqqani forces at 2,000 to 4,000 fighters and say the group maintains close ties with al-Qaida.

Earlier Saturday, hundreds of Afghans and officials had gathered just a few hundred meters (yards) from the site of the attack to lay wreaths at a statue to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the death of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the charismatic Northern Alliance commander who was killed in an al-Qaida suicide bombing two days before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The alliance joined with the United States to help rout the Taliban after America invaded Afghanistan a month later in the wake of the attacks.

Renaissance Guild heads into 12th season with new energy

When the Renaissance Guild board met for a retreat ahead of its 12th season, it came up with a long list of ideas.

?Then I said, ?Now we all need to put our realistic hats on,'? said Danielle King, who co-founded the company and presides over its board.

Some of that energy came from a desire to be good stewards for the company in the wake of the death of co-founder Paul Riddle Jr., who served as board president until his death in April.

?We want to do things that are going to take us to the next level,? she said.

Among other things, the company is looking for an artistic director and is looking into ways to expand its education program.

The Guild will kick off its 2012-13 season with a gala Oct. 20 at the Little Carver Civic Center.

Both fully staged productions in the new season ? ?Black Nativity,? slated for Dec. 14-16, and ?A Raisin in the Sun,? running Feb. 15-24 ? will be presented in the Jo Long Theatre of the Carver Community Cultural Center.

In addition, there will be one edition of ActOne, the company's popular 10-minute play series, in the Little Carver in May. And plans are being made for a memorial service for Riddle.

The company is also looking into possible collaborations. They've received a lot of offers, King said, and people from throughout the theater community touched base to make sure the company was all right following Riddle's death.

She was touched by the support.

?I love San Antonio so much I can hardly stand it,? she said.

CONVENTION WATCH: An appraisal, Mitt who?

___

AN APPRAISAL

He calibrated. Then he attacked. Then he did it all over again.

Carefully, deliberately, President Obama reached out to independent voters in his speech Thursday night by calibrating how he talked about government, personal responsibility and the economy. Yet he also provided the type of meaty, base-pleasing comments that he hopes will get loyal Democrats fired up to work for his re-election the next two months.

For the most part, Obama sought to present himself as empathetic and in charge. He never hesitated to claim credit for saving the auto industry, pulling troops from Iraq and killing Osama bin Laden. Pointing to those successes, he insisted that government can do much that good and is important ? but, mindful of the socialism charges leveled against him, he also made a point of saying it doesn't have all the answers.

He was perhaps most interesting when he acknowledged that the country still has a long way to go to recover from the devastating economic crisis of four years ago. With unemployment still at 8.3 percent, his campaign must know that sounding too upbeat on the economy could be disastrous.

And yet the president ended his speech insisting that America can soar once again. In a direct outreach to the voters who propelled him to office four years ago, he ended by imploring that if they still believe in America's possibilities, then they must vote for him.

Hours from now, the government will release the country's latest unemployment numbers. And so the argument Obama made here will mix with that as the race enters its next phase: an intense, two-month push to Election Day.

___

MITT WHO?

Once.

That's how many times Mitt Romney was mentioned by name by President Barack Obama in his lengthy speech Thursday night accepting the Democratic nomination to run for re-election.

Oh, there was no mistaking who Obama was talking about when he spoke about those who want to cut taxes for the wealthy and roll back federal regulations. Nor was there any doubt about the identity of "my opponent," who, Obama said, would let oil companies write the nation's energy plan and endanger the environment.

The president gave some clues, talking about "our friends at the Republican convention."

The one time Obama mentioned his opponent by name, according to the text distributed by the convention, was this: "But when Governor Romney and his allies in Congress tell us we can somehow lower our deficit by spending trillions more on new tax breaks for the wealthy ? well, you do the math."

? Terence Hunt ? Twitter http://twitter.com/terence942

___

AFTER THE SPEECH

Obama's speech is over, and the arena is alive with American flags, Bruce Springsteen music and signs as he waves to the crowd. The end of this convention marks the beginning of the end of the campaign for the incumbent president ? the moment when the race becomes a sprint. First lady Michelle Obama and their daughters are with him on the stage as Springsteen sings, "We take care of our own" and Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, join them amid a deluge of confetti ? which replaced the balloons planned when the speech was going to be outdoors.

___

NOW EXPERIENCE MATTERS

In his speech, President Barack Obama is telling the audience that "in a world of new threats and new challenges," they should choose "leadership that has been tested and proven."

He didn't feel that way four years ago.

His campaign in 2008 was built on the ideas of hope and change. And during that time, he hit back against the idea that national security experience was critical for a new president. At the same time, opponent John McCain's camp was criticizing him for having very little experience governing.

Nor was the issue a small one four years ago. Polls indicated back then that many voters perceived Obama's biggest weakness then as his lack of foreign policy and national security experience, especially at a time when America was embroiled in wars.

Since then, of course, Obama has gained much experience during four years as president. Now, he says, experience is important.

? Sally Buzbee

___

SHIRT TALES

It's only a slight exaggeration to say there are almost as many T-shirt designs promoting President Barack Obama as there are delegates at the Democratic National Convention.

There are the one that had to be printed quickly, like the one of the picture sent out by the president on Twitter as a response to actor Clint Eastwood's monologue at the Republican convention. Obama is sitting in his leather chair, with "This seat is taken" written across the top.

Several T-shirt peddlers combined pictures of civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Obama. One said "Keep dreaming," while another read "The audacity of a dream."

There are serious shirts, like the one detailing 11 accomplishments of the president's first term including bailing out the auto industry, repealing the ban on gay soldiers in the military and passing major changes to health case.

Then there are the funny ones. First Lady Michelle Obama is shown on one in a sleeveless dress and the slogan "I believe in the right to bare arms." Another shows a smiling Obama leaning out a White House window and a forlorn Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney standing outside the fence with "No Ad-Mitt-Ance" written across the bottom.

___

'THIS DEMOCRACY IS OURS'

Pushing back against Republican criticism of him as a big-government liberal, President Barack Obama said he realizes government can't solve all of the nation's problems.

Churches and charities can often make more of a difference than just a poverty program, he said, and people who refuse to help themselves shouldn't get handouts.

"But we don't think that government is the source of all our problems - any more than are welfare recipients, or corporations, or unions, or immigrants, or gays, or any other group we're told to blame for our troubles," Obama told the cheering crowd of delegates.

"Because we understand that this democracy is ours," he said.

? Connie Cass ? Twitter http://twitter.com/ConnieCass

___

HEATING THINGS UP

President Barack Obama took on climate change skeptics in his acceptance speech, saying he will continue to work to reduce carbon pollution that is warming the planet.

"Climate change is not a hoax. More droughts and floods and wildfires are not a joke," Obama told delegates. "They're a threat to our children's future. And in this election, you can do something about it."

___

FOREIGN POLICY

After several minutes of reasonably nonconfrontational language in his convention speech, Obama turned hard into foreign policy and went straight for the GOP jugular. To wit:

"So now we face a choice. My opponent and his running mate are new to foreign policy, but from all that we've seen and heard, they want to take us back to an era of blustering and blundering that cost America so dearly. After all, you don't call Russia our number one enemy - and not al Qaeda - unless you're still stuck in a Cold War time warp. You might not be ready for diplomacy with Beijing if you can't visit the Olympics without insulting our closest ally. My opponent said it was "tragic" to end the war in Iraq, and he won't tell us how he'll end the war in Afghanistan. I have, and I will."

DELICATE BALANCE

In the first part of his speech, President Obama is hitting at the Republicans for saying that things are not going well in America. But in his words he's offering few specifics of what they would do to improve that. Obama's campaign has been sounding a theme in recent days that the country's situation has improved in the last four years but that there is still much work to do.

The president faces a delicate balance. He needs to provide optimism about the future and persuade people to stick with him as president, while being cautious not to minimize the fact that many people in the United States are still suffering economically. Unemployment remains at 8.3 percent in one of the slowest recoveries from a recession in U.S. history.

OBAMA'S CASE FOR RE-ELECTION

How Barack Obama sums up his argument for re-election:

"Our problems can be solved. Our challenges can be met. The path we offer may be harder, but it leads to a better place. And I'm asking you to choose that future.

"I'm asking you to rally around a set of goals for your country - goals in manufacturing, energy, education, national security, and the deficit; a real, achievable plan that will lead to new jobs, more opportunity, and rebuild this economy on a stronger foundation.

"That's what we can do in the next four years, and that is why I'm running for a second term as president of the United States."

THE DAUGHTERS

The Obamas' two daughters joined their mother in chairs on the convention hall floor as soon as she left the stage after introducing the president. Malia is wearing a royal blue dress and Sasha a black and white checked dress with a gold belt. As their father accepted the nomination, and the crowd leapt to its feet and applauded, the two girls looked at their mother, then jumped up also and applauded.

EXPIRED PRESCRIPTION?

Barack Obama says that all the Republicans are offering America is "the same prescription they've had for the last 30 years":

"Have a surplus? Try a tax cut."

"Deficit too high? Try another."

"Feel a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations, and call us in the morning!"

WEATHER, OUTSIDE

President Barack Obama took the stage in air-conditioned comfort for his acceptance speech Thursday night at the Democratic Convention.

He might have had to roll up his sleeves if he had gone with his original plan of speaking in Charlotte's outdoor football stadium, but he wouldn't have needed a rain jacket.

It was a humid 76 degrees outside as Obama took the stage at Time Warner Arena, after his motorcade came through a mostly cloudless Charlotte night.

Obama's campaign decided to move the speech to the indoor area on Wednesday because of the threat of thunderstorms. And one storm did roll through Charlotte shortly after 3 p.m., when people may have started lining up outside the football stadium.

Obama took the stage at about 10:25 p.m. and opened his speech without mentioning the weather or the move.

QUICKQUOTE: OBAMA

"I know that campaigns can seem small, even silly sometimes. Trivial things become big distractions. Serious issues become sound bites. And the truth gets buried under an avalanche of money and advertising. If you're sick of hearing me approve this message, believe me ? so am I. But when all is said and done ? when you pick up that ballot to vote ? you will face the clearest choice of any time in a generation." ? President Barack Obama, accepting the Democratic Party's nomination for a second term.

A PART OF IT

Thousands of people whose plans to attend President Barack Obama's acceptance speech at Bank of America Stadium got derailed by the weather still got energized for the fall campaign with several watch parties inside the Charlotte Convention Center.

Obama campaign volunteers and his admirers who secured tickets to the stadium said they were disappointed with missing his speech in person but still wanted to be a part of history. So at least 4,000 were content with sitting in air-conditioned comfort inside convention center meeting rooms to cheer on Vice President Joe Biden and the president while watching big screen TVs.

"I'd like to have found all of us together at the stadium," said David Whitson, 54, of Charlotte, but "this is very electrifying." Whitson is a carpenter who spent the week setting up the stadium for the speech that never happened there. Now, he said, "we're taking it all down."

The watch parties were organized by the Obama campaign in North Carolina and suggested volunteers who secured stadium tickets to bring family and friends.

Jackie White, 54, of Charlotte said she waited in line for 10 hours to get tickets but wasn't too heartbroken about the venue change. She was still undecided entering Obama's Thursday night speech about whether she'd vote for him.

Still, White said, "I came here to want to be a part of this extraordinary moment."

GETTING READY

Ushers are handing out small flags to the crowd, as they watch a video waiting for Obama's speech to start. Mrs. Obama also left her chair on the convention floor ushered by aides backstage.

WAITING FOR BARACK

First lady Michelle Obama is sitting in a seat on the floor of the convention hall, between her mother and Jill Biden, as Vice President Biden gives his speech to the delegates. Mrs. Obama is wearing an off-the-shoulder purple and white dress. Seated behind her are her brother and the president's half-sister and other family members of the Obamas and the Bidens. They include Biden's son, Beau, Delaware's attorney general, who formally put his father's name in for nomination.

The president's daughters, Sasha and Malia, are expected to join their mother and father on stage after his speech ? but they are not sitting with their mother at the moment. The first lady's group is just off the stage, on the convention hall floor, in front of the first group of delegates.

FREESTYLING BIDEN

Joe Biden is known for freestyling occasionally when he talks. And he did it a lot Thursday night, though in minor ways.

A text of his prepared remarks distributed in advance turned out to be more like a roadmap than a script for Biden, who reworked sentences on the fly, added a few of his own and generally talked rather than recited. Nothing major to speak of, but the "as delivered" version of his remarks will most certainly have a lot of words than the advance text didn't

Is that simply political authenticity, or is it a nailbiter for the Democratic message masters who worry that an off-the-cuff Biden can be ? as they've seen in the past ? an embarrassing Biden?

VEEP CLUB

He may have been 1,000 miles away but former Vice President Walter Mondale had a front-row seat for Vice President Joe Biden's national convention speech.

Mondale joined more than 100 others in a University of Minnesota auditorium Thursday night to watch Biden accept his party's nomination for another term. It played on a big screen.

The event, to be capped by President Barack Obama's speech, was an organizing tool for the president's campaign in which students were encouraged to sign up to vote and volunteer.

Few in the mostly college-aged crowd were even born when Mondale ran for president in 1984 and won only his native Minnesota.

MUSHY STUFF

There's a lot of love in the air at the Democratic convention. At least between Joe and Jill Biden.

The vice president's wife was full of tender praise as she introduced her husband, telling the crowd she loved him from the start even though "I didn't agree to marry him until the fifth time he asked me."

When the vice president took the stage, things got a little mushy. He opened his remarks with a shout-out to "Jilly." If she hadn't said yes to that fifth marriage proposal, he said, he just didn't know what he would have done with himself.

The tender words didn't last long, though. Biden quickly launched into his prepared speech, a full-throated defense of President Barack Obama and a sharp critique of Republican rival Mitt Romney.

LOOSER KERRY

Sen. John Kerry was way looser ? and more full of quips ? in his Democratic National Convention speech than he ever was when running for president himself.

Taking several sharp prods at Republican nominee Mitt Romney, the Massachusetts senator and 2004 Democratic candidate quipped that for Romney, "an overseas trip is what you call it when you trip all over yourself overseas,"

Romney's trip to Europe was marked by several gaffes, including his questioning of whether Britain was ready for the London Olympics.

"It wasn't a goodwill mission," Kerry quipped. "It was a blooper reel."

Kerry famously took the podium and gave an exaggerated salute as he accepted the party's nomination in 2004. He lost to President George W. Bush, who won re-election.

CELEBRITY WATCH

President Barack Obama and Republican running mate Paul Ryan are just two regular guys ? with plenty of famous friends.

Obama's celebrity buddies were taking the stage at his convention, while Ryan was mingling with high-dollar donors at a Beverly Hills, Calif., fundraiser Thursday night.

Actresses Scarlett Johansson, Eva Longoria and Kerry Washington each had speaking roles at the Democratic Party's convention in Charlotte. "Mad Men" actor Jon Hamm and his girlfriend, actress-writer-director Jennifer Westfeldt, were also spotted in the crowd.

DEAD? NO MATTER

Even death doesn't keep political heroes away from party conventions.

Ronald Reagan, Edward M. Kennedy and Geraldine Ferraro ? they've all made video appearances at either the Democratic or Republican conventions. Their images ? captured in the years of their political glory ? rekindle warm memories and stir political passions. The videos are part of the toolkit that both parties use to rouse their supporters and encourage voters to get to the polls.

It turns out that dead villains have a place at the convention, too. Terror leader Osama bin Laden, for instance. He's been mentioned numerous times at the Democratic convention to show that President Barack Obama is tough on terrorists and national security. His image even flashed briefly during a video about his killing.

Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, turning the tables on a Republican criticism of Obama, drew cheers Thursday by suggesting that the now-dead bin Laden be asked if he's better off now than he was four years ago.
