Fun Thanksgiving Activity for Grandkids | Grandparenting through ...

Thanksgiving is just around the corner! If you?re like me, your family probably has many different traditions that help bring you closer together and, at the same time, help pass along your faith. There is one special tradition of my family?s that I?d love to share with you. This is an easy craft, one that grandkids of any age can participate in, and one you can do whether your grandkids live near or far.

Our family calls this the Thanksgiving Blessing Tree, although some refer to it as the Thankful Tree. There are many variations of how to create the tree, and there is no right or wrong way. You can be as simple, fancy, or as creative as you and your grandkids want to be!

You can form your tree out of construction paper or cardboard by cutting a trunk and branches out of either material. I used cardboard so it would last longer. Either way, if you want a large tree that you can put on your refrigerator or against a wall, you?ll need to piece together several sections of branches and a trunk. Once that is formed, make leaves from various fall colors of construction paper. (See image below from www.ecenglish.com.)

Another idea for making your tree?and one that will surely endure the ages?is to use an actual tree branches, turning one branch sideways to create the trunk. Or, form a trunk and branches out of wire simply by twisting wire pieces of branches together to wrap and bend around the trunk. With either method, insert the trunk into a sand or gravel-filled pot, and use construction paper or craft foam for the leaves. To hang the leaves, punch a hole in the ?stem? then create a loop with yarn or thread to go through the hole and around the branches. (See image below from www.spoonful.com.)

Now, your part is done! Your grandkids? job is to either create their own leaves or use ones that you provide and write on them the various ways that God has blessed them during the past year. You can do this on Thanksgiving Day when your grandkids are with you, or have them mail you their finished leaves if they live far away. Be sure they put their name on the leaves if you have more than one grandchild, perhaps a picture of themselves, and date each leaf with the year.

If you have several grandkids, you?ll have a very full tree after only a few years. But what a great way to count God?s blessings throughout your family and to see a touching reminder every year of how God is moving in your family?s life!

If you have special traditions or similar crafts you?d like to share with our readers, please let us know about them.

Raw Talent

Raw Talent

I love art. I have always loved art. I?m good at art. I have always been good at art. Art came easily to me and I found out, at an early age, I had a knack for it. I could draw, paint, weave, sculpt, and design. I had what they call raw talent.

My name is Iron-head Bradley. They call me iron-head because I?m hardheaded, hard to understand, and hard to get along with, at times. But, I can create some of the most beautiful artwork you will ever see ? and do it with ease.

So, when I went online hoping to learn about designing web sites I had ?promoting-my-own-artwork? in the back of my mind. I was going to get it out there. I wanted to show off all this creativity everyone has been ooh-ing and ahh-ing over. I wanted my own online business and I was willing to do what it took.

Ok, so, you already know I am an artsy kind of guy. What you might not know is that I love ALL things art. If it is art related it is Iron-head Bradley related. I can?t get enough of art or of the art world. It is in the blood. You could say I?m artistically inclined.

Though I didn?t have a website of my own, I could find my way around the internet. I had enough savvy to find the information I was looking for and I had a good idea of what would or wouldn?t work for me. I wish I could say I spent days searching hundreds of sites before I found the ideal site but it popped up only after about 15 searches.

I knew it when I saw it. I knew the site I was looking at would teach me everything I needed to know about selling my artwork online. I had seen a lot of web based art sites and really hated the ones that just dealt with 1 area of art ? like just paintings and nothing else.

The broader minded art sites might include drawing or photography with the paintings. The best art web sites, like the ones I like, are real broad. They can tell you all about drawings, paintings, sculpture, popular art events, art news, art classes and a whole slew of other art topics.

The site I found for building my site is really the ideal. It will teach me how to build my website, get good traffic going to it, and even help me to sell a masterpiece or two. And, all this on a website that focuses on art-based and art related things.

Some web sites are just plain better than others.

Apple adds Rubles and other currencies to App Store, bumps minimum price to ?0.89 in Europe

Apple adds Rubles and other currencies to app store, bumps minimum price to 089 in Europe

After announcing slightly under par financials, Apple has added more ways it can be paid for apps, though it also bumped the minimum freight to get one across Europe. The new lowest price users in France, Germany, Italy and other nations "over there" can pay for an app is now €0.89, a euro-dime bump from before -- apparently due to the weak euro and local tax hikes. On the other hand, Cupertino also added more currencies accepted at its store: South African Rand, Turkish Lira, Russian Rubles, Indian Rupees, Isreali New Shekel's, Saudi Arabian Riyal, Indonesian Rupish and UAE Dirham can all now be used to pay. Apple has tinkered with its prices before in varying amounts overseas depending on the nation, so you may want to check your own country's App Store for the news -- bad or good.

Facebook shares post biggest single-day gain

(AP) ? Facebook's stock gained the most in a single day Wednesday since it began trading in May, a sign that the social media company's complicated relationship with Wall Street may be getting brighter.

It's been a rough five months since the social network's initial public stock offering, and it's too early to tell whether investors' optimism is here to stay. But on Wednesday they latched on to clear signs of growth in the company's third-quarter earnings report. Several analysts upgraded the stock.

Besides posting quarterly results that inched past Wall Street's expectations, Facebook on Tuesday also gave details for the first time on how much money it made from mobile ads. This has been a concern since before its IPO. Although the majority of 1 billion people who use Facebook each month now access it using a mobile device, the 8-year-old company was created in the age of desktop computers, for Web pages. Facebook now calls itself a "mobile-first" company, but it only started showing mobile ads earlier this year.

On Tuesday, Facebook said that nearly $153 million of its $1.26 billion revenue came from mobile advertisements. The rate of advertising revenue growth also accelerated since the second quarter.

Shares of Facebook Inc., which is based in Menlo Park, Calif., rose $3.73, or 19 percent, to close at $23.23 on Wednesday. It's by far the stock's biggest one-day gain, in percentage terms, since Facebook went public on May 18. Still, shares are still off 39 percent from the company's IPO price of $38.

In his upgrade of Facebook, Citi Investment Research analyst Mark Mahaney said that for the first time since the IPO, investors see a reasonably priced stock combined with accelerating growth at the company. He raised his rating to "Buy" from "Neutral" and increased his target price to $35 from $30.

The analyst noted that advertising revenue grew at a faster pace at Facebook, at a time when rival Google Inc. saw a slowdown. Google surprised investors last week with weaker-than-expected earnings that showed its ad revenue growing at the slowest pace in three years.

Tuesday's strong report doesn't mean that Facebook is out of the woods. Later this month, and then again on Nov. 14 and Dec. 14, more employees will be allowed to sell their holdings as restrictions on selling, typical in the months after an IPO, expire. If shares flood the market on those days, it could weigh on Facebook's stock.

Sprint sells 1.5 million iPhones, 1 million other smartphones, but makes a net loss of $767 million

Sprint 2012 Q3

Sprint's latest financials show that the network is stemming its losses, but is still taking a hit on a $767 million net loss and an operating loss of $231 million. Dan Hesse's company managed to bring in service revenues of $7.3 billion and added a further 900,000 customers in the period, but ate $397 million write-down as part of the Nextel shutdown.

Naturally, it's been a busy three months for Sprint after it reported a $629 million operating loss in the second quarter of the year. Since then, it's been bought out by Japanese carrier Softbank for $20.1 billion and has used some of the cash to regain a controlling stake in Clearwire.

Uncle charged in triple-murder had troubled ties ... - KWQC-TV6 Home

By JUDY LIN
Associated Press

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. (AP) - A 19-year-old man accused of killing his sister-in-law and her two small children in an attack that stunned authorities for its brutality had a strained relationship with his family, police in Northern California said Wednesday.

"Something bad was brewing" between Grigoriy Bukhantsov and his relatives before the slayings Tuesday in Rancho Cordova, Sacramento County sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos said.

Authorities had not indicated exactly what they think prompted the attack.

Bukhantsov was picked up at a Denny's restaurant hours after midnight Wednesday. He had fallen asleep in a booth in front of a plate of chicken-fried steak with gravy, where police said they found him after locating a minivan that had been stolen from the home in the Sacramento suburb.

He was booked into the Sacramento County Jail without bail. Ramos said he was the only suspect. The father, who discovered the scene, is not a suspect. He was distraught and has been cooperating with authorities, police said.

Bukhantsov had been hopping between the homes of various relatives and "just didn't have a good relationship with family members, and there have been suggestions that something bad was brewing for some time," Ramos said.

Ramos said Bukhantsov's drifting may have included possibly the tidy duplex in the Sacramento suburb where his brother's family lived.

"But I don't think anybody, obviously, could have foreseen an act like this," he added.

Ramos said the victims suffered extensive trauma, likely after a "violent encounter."

He said the manner of the attack was a stabling, slashing or slicing, but he declined to say what kind of weapon was used or go into further detail pending a coroner's report. Authorities also have not identified the victims.

Ramos said the attack was "shocking, even to veteran law enforcement."

The crime has rocked a large community of Slavic immigrants who came to the area in the 1990s after the breakup of the Soviet Union.

The slain mother and her husband were members of the Bethany Slavic Missionary Church, a 6,000-member evangelical Pentecostal denomination on the outskirts of Sacramento that was founded by "immigrants from the former Soviet Union," according to the church's website.

The mother, identified by church secretary Valentina Bondaruk as Alina, had been baptized at the church and grew up attending Sunday school there. Bondaruk said the woman taught Sunday school at one point and regularly helped out during church functions.

They were "a very good family and very good Christians," Bondaruk said.

She identified the slain children as 3-year-old Emmanuela, 2-year-old Avenir. Another child, 6-month-old Mark, survived the attack and is with family, police said.

All the names were chosen from the Bible, Bondaruk said.

The children's father, Denis Bukhantsov, arrived home Tuesday afternoon and found the grisly scene, Ramos said.

There were signs of trouble a day before the slayings, said neighbor Alex Oropesa.

"They did have a family issue the day before," Oropesa said. "I just know that they had a lot of people over the day before dealing with issues."

Oropesa said she could not say exactly what the problems were because the family was speaking Ukrainian, which she can't understand.

She said there appeared to be only "a little bit of arguing."

On the day of the slayings, Oropesa said she heard some tires screech, but otherwise nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

The killing also had parallels to another tragic slaying in Sacramento County's Ukrainian community. Nikolay Soltys was charged with killing his pregnant wife, his 3-year-old son and four other relatives in Rancho Cordova in 2001. He was captured after a nationwide manhunt and later hanged himself in jail while awaiting trial.

There are more than 100,000 members of the Russian-speaking community in the Sacramento area, said David Ponomar, who owns the Sacramento-based Afisha Media Group, which includes a Russian-language newspaper, magazine, radio programs and TV programs.

Maria Murguia, who lives next door to the home where the slayings occurred, said she didn't know the family well, but would often say hello to them, especially when she saw the children playing in the backyard. She said she never heard any yelling or fighting coming from the home.

"They were a normal family. I heard the babies playing in the backyard and saw their mother giving them food sometimes. I never see anything," she said. "I don't know what happened, and I'm so sad because those are little kids."

Amish children are twice as physically active as non-Amish children are, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Old Order Amish children are much more physically active and three times less likely to be overweight than non-Amish children, which may provide them with some long-term protection against developing Type 2 diabetes, University of Maryland School of Medicine researchers report in the journal Diabetes Care.

The researchers found that Amish children in Lancaster County, Pa., spent an additional 34 minutes a day in light physical activity, plus another 53 additional minutes a day in moderate to vigorous activity compared to non-Amish white children living nearby on Maryland's rural Eastern Shore. The amount of moderate to vigorous activity, which is important to cardiovascular health, was twice that of the non-Amish children. The level of physical activity was inversely correlated to their BMI, or body mass index, which is a measurement of body fat based on a person's height and weight.

"We know from our earlier research that Amish adults are just as overweight as non-Amish Americans of European origin, but they have half the incidence of Type 2 diabetes," says Soren Snitker, M.D., Ph.D., the study's senior author and an associate professor of medicine and pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. "This study suggests that the Amish gain their excess weight relatively late in life, which may decrease their long-term risk of developing the disease." The number of years someone is obese is a risk factor for diabetes, irrespective of the person's age and current BMI.

Higher levels of physical activity and lower BMI are both protective against diabetes, Dr. Snitker says. Obesity is a major risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Snitker says that while it is unrealistic to imagine that the general public will adopt the Amish lifestyle in its entirety, the study results underscore the need for parents to encourage their children to be more physically active. "We may be able to learn something from the attitudes of the Amish," he says. "Whether children are physically active or not depends a lot on choices their parents make. Do they facilitate physically demanding activities for their children or do they allow them to spend long hours playing electronic games or watching television?"

E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., vice president for medical affairs at the University of Maryland and the John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor and dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, says, "As America's children become increasingly overweight, they become more vulnerable to diseases such as Type 2 diabetes. The incidence of diabetes among our young people is rising at an alarming rate. This study by Dr. Snitker and his colleagues offers clear evidence of the benefits of exercise and maintaining a healthy body weight as reflected in the body mass index calculation."

The Old Order Amish in Lancaster County, Pa., trace their ancestry back 14 generations to a small group of Anabaptist Christians who came to Pennsylvania from Europe in the mid-1700s. They don't drive cars or have electricity in their homes and eschew many of the trappings of modern life.

The researchers compared data from 270 Old Order Amish children, ages 8 to 19, from Lancaster County and 229 children from Maryland's Eastern Shore. They measured the children's physical activity by having them wear a device to track their body movement, which allowed them to calculate how much energy they burned as a result of their activity.

Typical Amish children's activities include walking to school, playing with their friends, and performing chores.

"The Amish lifestyle affects the whole family, involving Old Order Amish (OOA) children in household or farming chores from an early age," the researchers note. "OOA children also seem to spend a substantial amount of time in outdoor play with their siblings and neighbors, facilitated by the large size of the OOA Amish nuclear family. OOA children do not use computers or electronic games, nor do they watch television. OOA children attend one-room school houses and almost always go outside for recess. Even the youngest OOA students use active transportation to get to school, generally walking in a group."

By comparison, non-Amish children "almost universally" travel to school and other destinations by bus or car, the researchers say.

The lead authors of the article are Kristen G. Hairston, M.D., M.P.H. and Julie D. Ducharme, M.D., who are both recent graduates of the fellowship program in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

The research was funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health (P30 DK072488, T32 AG000219, K01 AG2278), the Geriatric Research and Education Clinical Center at the Baltimore Veterans Administration Medical Center, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The journal Diabetes Care is an ADA publication.

The study is one of a number of studies conducted by University of Maryland School of Medicine researchers using data collected from the Old Order Amish in Pennsylvania. Alan R. Shuldiner, M.D., associate dean for personalized medicine and director of the Program in Personalized and Genomic Medicine at the School of Medicine, and a co-author of this study, operates an Amish research clinic in Lancaster Pa. Over the past 20 years, he and his research team have conducted more than a dozen studies with the Amish, looking for genes that may cause common diseases, such as diabetes, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

New self-healing coating for aluminum developed to replace cancer-causing product

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? A research team at the University of Nevada, Reno has developed a new environmentally-friendly coating for aluminum to replace the carcinogenic chromate coatings used in aerospace applications. The chromate conversion coatings have been used for more than 50 years to protect aluminum from corrosion.

The team presented their research last week at the international Pacific Rim Meeting on Electrochemical and Solid-State Science in Hawaii.

"It was well received at the conference," Dev Chidambaram, lead scientist and assistant professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Nevada, said. "There is no question that this will be able to replace the chromate-based coating. Even though the coating formulation is yet to be optimized, the coating has shown exceptional performance."

Attempts to replace chromate coatings with non-toxic coatings have been underway since the 1980s. The awareness on effects of chromates was brought to the forefront in 1993 by the real-life incident involving Erin Brokovich and depicted in the movie released in 2000 of the same name. Although the use of chromates for consumer and automotive applications has been banned, it is still in use by the defense and aerospace industries under various exemptions.

The carcinogenic coatings were exempted from the ban due to unavailability of suitable replacement combined with the high human and financial cost of failure from corrosion. The search for a suitable replacement has been elusive primarily due to one main characteristic of the coating referred to as "self-healing," the ability of the coating to heal itself after being damaged or scratched.

When scratched, the coating components from nearby sites migrate to the damaged region and re-protect the underlying alloy. A short video of the coating formation is on Chidambaram's website, www.electrochemical.org/ under the heading "Cool Videos."

Chidambaram's formulation performs comparably to the chromate formula in its ability for self-healing, which is important to the defense and aerospace industry. The coating can be applied to all aluminum products. The new formula creates an environmentally-benign molybdate-based coating that provides corrosion protection to aluminum, used for aircraft and spacecraft. These coatings, when damaged, will re-heal themselves.

The University of Nevada, Reno team developed and tested more than 300 coatings before arriving at this formulation. They used a complimentary suite of advanced surface analytical techniques such as Raman microspectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to conclusively prove the presence of molybdate in the scratched region. Further, using electrochemical testing, the team showed the coating re-protected itself via self-healing upon scratch test.

The team includes graduate student David Rodriquez, who conducted the extensive testing on the materials, and undergraduate aerospace engineering major at the University of Colorado, Boulder intern Roshan Misra, who began the project as a high school summer intern from Reno High School. The team is still working to optimize the coating formulation for even better protection.

"This has taken 14 years of work, continuing on work I did at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the Brookhaven National Laboratory," Chidambaram said.

In Need Of Some Helpful Internet Marketing Advice? Take These ...

As more people have gained access to the Internet, online advertising has become more important than ever. If you would like to give it a try, the information in this article could help you. Utilize them in addition to your current marketing plan.

?Guarantee? is a great word to use in internet marketing. Customers want to feel safe when purchasing products and, by having a guarantee policy in effect, it will ease their minds. The guarantees that you offer can be different, depending on the product you are selling. A 90-day or lifetime guarantee would work. Depending on the quality of your product, you should choose the guarantee that will provide confidence without destroying your profits.

It can be hard to decide how to keep your website going. Deduce your choices into one winning strategy. The niche you choose should be something with which you are comfortable and that you enjoy. Marketing your site is easier if you have a target.

Use ?guaranteed? in your ads and content to help boost your internet marketing strategy. The value of a guarantee varies greatly depending on the company offering it, but the mere offer of a guarantee seem to allay many concerns. Everyone works for their money, so they want to be certain that what they are purchasing isn?t going to just be money down the drain.

A good way to promote your products online is to offer discounts. Show the discount price alongside the product?s original selling price for comparison. One more example of this concept is to state ?Instead of paying $45, if you order now, you pay only $25?.

There are many free marketing resources for people who cannot afford consultants. Some examples including attending local conferences and workshops on business development, participating in online business forums, finding e-books on the subject and reading blogs about marketing.

With Internet marketing, as with traditional marketing, it is important to use a variety of methods if you want success. This point is key when first starting out, as it is difficult to get the momentum of a steady flow of income going. So never give up a stable job unless you are certain this new job can be profitable.

Try creating a web page for public relationships to help out your business?s marketing. Try to target your audience with articles that may be seen in magazines and newspapers. It is a simple, yet very effective, strategy to generate more publicity for your business.

While Internet marketing may seem daunting, it uses the same basic principles as traditional marketing. Apply these ideas and maximize the success of your business quickly.

Crazy Taxi Is a Wild Pedestrian-Terrorizing Jaunt

Back around the turn of the millennium, Sega had itself a bona fide hit in Crazy Taxi, a driving game that has players picking up fares around a city that looks a lot like San Francisco and getting to their destinations in as little time as possible. What began as an arcade game has been ported to the Sega Dreamcast and then to various other platforms, which now includes iOS.

Legal Concerns: Expiring domains

So I found this really cool expired domain today.
As usual, i did some background check on this domain before purchasing.
To my surprise, the previous owner is located in the same country and city as me; and i believe it was operate as a registered business (LLC).

So lets call it "dogtrainingsupplies.com" (just an example)

If I purchase this domain and monetize it using amazon, is that legal? (assuming he did not trademark this name)
Or is it illegal because I am misleading visitors believing that 'dogtrainingsupplies' now works with amazon?

Thanks

Scorpion raising: nurtured under a deadly sting

Rowan Hooper, news editor

01_Junge_Skorpione_C.jpg

(Image: Ingo Arndt)

WHAT'S not to love about this photo? In one fell swoop it inverts the reputation of a much-feared invertebrate. For the defenceless newborns sitting under the vicious sting are the scorpion's own offspring, tended by their mother until they are big enough to survive on their own.

It's not just me who likes the shot - it has won German photographer Ingo Arndt the Fritz P?lking award for the second time.

There's a good reason why scorpions are one of the few instantly recognisable invertebrates: that bulb at the end of the abdomen is full of deadly venom. What is less well known is that unlike most other arachnids they are viviparous: rather than laying eggs they give birth to live young. The juveniles are unable to feed or defend themselves, or regulate their moisture levels - they need their mother's protection. It's all really quite cute.

Buthidae family - to which the animals pictured here belong - have venom that is deadly to humans. Cuddly they ain't.

"The owner of the scorpion mentioned that the animal is very dangerous," says Arndt. "I just kept a safe distance, around 10 centimetres. The good thing is that they can't jump."

Greek state TV slammed for cutting Downton Abbey gay kiss

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek state television came under fire from the country's main opposition party and critics for editing out a gay kiss on Monday's primetime premiere of popular British period drama "Downton Abbey".

Greeks took to social networking sites such as Twitter to complain about the NET channel's decision to axe a scene from episode one of the series showing a kiss between a visiting duke and Downton's unscrupulous footman Thomas. NET defended its move, citing parental guidance viewing rules.

"As incredible as it may seem for a democratic country in the 21st century, officials of the NET television channel censored the scene of a kiss between men from the TV drama Downton Abbey," the SYRIZA party said in a statement.

"This is of course an obvious case of censorship, an extreme act of homophobia and discrimination which unfortunately, after what has been happening recently, we cannot characterize as unprecedented."

One SYRIZA lawmaker, Dimitris Papadimoulis, questioned whether the omission was due to pressure from the far-right Golden (GD) Dawn party or religious authorities with a tweet asking: "NET 'cut' a gay kiss on the premiere of a top TV series. Who decided this censorship? (Bishop) Seraphim of Piraeus and GD?"

Greek state television said the kiss was not censored but rather edited out to comply with rules on the time slot and parental consent label given to the show, which was aired at 10:05 p.m. An unedited version will be broadcast later on Tuesday night, it said.

"The love affair between the two men... was not censored," said Costas Spyropoulos, managing director of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation. "The kiss was not shown because of the time the program was broadcast and the corresponding parental guidance warnings."

Greece has seen an upsurge in right-wing extremism since a national election in June ushered the ultra-nationalist Golden Dawn party to parliament for the first time in its history.

The latest controversy comes days after dozens of demonstrators, including Golden Dawn lawmakers, clashed with police outside an Athens theatre and forced the postponement of an American play that depicts Jesus and his apostles as gay.

Television images showed bearded black-robed priests with crosses in their hands tearing up posters promoting the play, while one woman was shown giving a Nazi-style salute.

Grammys give Whitney Houston a glittering salute

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Whitney Houston was given a final sendoff by the Grammys on Thursday as Halle Berry, Britney Spears, Jennifer Hudson, Usher and other stars shared their memories and performed in homage to the late singer.

Academy-award winner Berry made a tearful introduction at the "We Will Always Love You: A Grammy Salute to Whitney Houston" special, and praised the "unforgettable" performer.

"She inspired a generation of little girls and women to believe in their own dream and to know that they had within themselves the greatest gift of all. I was one of those little girls who then became a woman who never ever, ever, stopped loving Whitney Houston," Berry said.

The event was attended by Houston's daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, who was joined by boyfriend Nick Gordon and sister-in-law Pat Houston.

Noticeably absent was Houston's mother, Cissy, and her brother Gary. Record label executive Clive Davis, who discovered the late singer, sat alongside the family in the front row.

The tribute comes towards the end of a year in which the music world was rocked by Houston's sudden death at age 48 in February. She was found dead in a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub on the night before the Grammy awards, from what authorities said was accidental drowning brought on by cocaine use and heart disease.

A homage to Houston was quickly put together at the Grammy awards in February with Jennifer Hudson singing a heart-felt rendition of "I Will Always Love You" on a stage lit by a single spotlight. Later in May, R&B star Jordin Sparks, who co-starred with Houston in the late singer's final movie "Sparkle," sang the same song at the Billboard Music Awards in tribute.

There was no mention of Houston's turbulent personal life and history of drug abuse on Thursday as the Grammy organizers decided to focus on the late singer's career achievements and best-known performances, including her rendition of the "Star-Spangled Banner" at the 1991 Superbowl.

Hudson on Thursday channeled Houston's style from the 1980s with big hair and a glittering blazer, performing more uptempo numbers with a medley of "I'm Every Woman," "How Will I Know" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody".

R&B star Usher sang "I Believe In You And Me" and gospel singers Cece Winans and Yolanda Adams delivered a rousing performance of "Count On Me," which had Houston's family in tears.

Canadian singer Celine Dion was on the bill to perform on the night but was unable to make it, taping her rendition of "The Greatest Love Of All" in Canada to air during the televised special.

The event organizers decided to leave Houston's best-known song, "I Will Always Love You," to the late singer, showing a tape of her singing at the 1994 Grammy awards.

Presenters at the event shared their memories. Pop star and "X Factor" judge Spears said her version of Houston's "I Have Nothing" scored her a deal with a record label and started her career.

The audience were also treated to exclusive interviews from the early days of Houston's career, showing her talking about fame, philosophy and religion.

The one-hour CBS special will be aired on November 16.

Simple Ideas On How To Have A Successful Home Based Business ...

There are times when life can get in the way. Where will you turn if after years of steady employment, you suddenly find yourself without a job? Have you contemplated starting a home-based business? There are tips in this piece that can lead you in that direction.

Working and living under the same roof is a recipe for a work life that starts to consume all of your home life and destroy your work/life balance. You should separate your work and personal life by establishing a specific work zone, as well as setting clear work hours to leave time for your personal life.

Attaining a high level of success with your home business requires the acumen to recognize unique opportunities and the courage to make the most of them. Envisioning fresh and creative ideas and putting them to the test can result in a larger customer base, and a significant increase in sales and profits. Sometimes, you can do better by deviating from your routine and trying new things.

business loans bad credit Having adequate safety is important for a home business so you can prevent accidents in the workplace, especially when your family is around. This might require you to invest in proper equipment, and set rules and boundaries. Taking the proper steps will keep both your business and your family from unforeseen accidents. Even home-based businesses can be subjected to inspections.

Every home business owner should have a presence on the internet. With a website your customers can browse with ease, whether designed by you or a professional, you will be more successful. Give your customers useful content and the ability to stay connected with you. Allow them the convenience of ordering your goods online wherever possible. Do research and talk to design companies to gain knowledge on the best ways to create a great website.

Design the layout of your office with ergonomics in mind. For example, choose a strategic spot on your desktop to place your laptop or your monitor. You can damage your neck and cause a lot of pain if you must constantly look up or down to see your screen well. If a great deal of your day will be spent at your desk, invest in the highest quality chair you can afford. Quality is an important focus when looking to buy keyboards, lighting fixtures and other office supplies. You can start with around 200 dollars.

A good way to gather information on running a home business is join an online forum on the topic. Joining a forum will give you a chance to exchange pertinent information with your business peers. You can compare ideas and suggestions with other people who are working from home.

Look online for the supplies that you can use for your home-based business at wholesale costs. Internet searches can turn up tons of suppliers who will sell you any type of supplies you need for your online business at low, cost-effective prices. You can buy supplies this way using your business license.

As was previously mentioned, many people desire to start their home-based businesses. While the overhead cost of a home business is low, you still need to know what you are getting into. bad credit business loans business loans bad credit

Software Patents: 50 Years of Circuitous Artifices - Patent Law Blog ...

By Dennis Crouch

I recently asked the courts for a decision on whether software is patentable. In my short essay, I argued that we have a de facto system that allows the issuance of software patents, but only after the innovative software elements are "hidden by innuendo and obfuscation." This makes software patents "harder to find, harder to examine, harder to understand, and thus much more problematic than they need to be."

In response, I received a nice note from longtime patent attorney Michael Rackman of Gottlieb Rackman in NYC. Rackman highlighted his 50-year-old article on the topic published as a student note in the 1963 volume of New York University Law Review. It turns out that my suggestions are simply a refrain echoing his thoughts from so long ago. Rackman's 1963 article concluded:

It is theoretically and practically possible to secure effective patent protection for computer programs. The patents issuing as a result of first attempts probably will obscure, or already have obscured, the true nature of the claimed inventions.

Perhaps na?ve at the time, Rackman was hopeful that the intentional obfuscation would end soon. He wrote:

Perhaps in the future it will be common practice to seek and secure program patent protection without resort to circuitous artifices.

I guess that future is still ahead of us.

  • See also, Orin Kerr, Computers and the Patent System: The Problem of the Second Step, 28 Rutgers Computer and Technology Law Journal 47 (2002) ("After almost forty years of debate and case law development, we seem no closer to a consensus than when we started.").

Spooky Fun or Scary Nuisance? Grandparenting Halloween Do's ...

?

?Trick or treat??

It?s a phrase that can be endearing or intimidating; and it?s heard all over the country, indeed over half the Western world, on the night of October 31. From the ritual pageantry of an American Halloween (pumpkins on the porch, parties throughout the neighbourhood) to the more prosaic English counterpart ? where little Johnny from next door stands sheepishly next to his mum while you try and find a biscuit from the cupboard ? Halloween is big business.

The origins of Halloween are (like most religious or quasi-religious festivals) complicated. Several pagan festivals bear ritual similarities with All Hallow?s Eve ? including the Celtic Samhain; and the Roman festival of the dead, Parentalia.

In all cases, the idea of departed souls is close at hand. The masks worn by modern trick or treaters have their origins in the idea that if you disguised your face, a ghost wouldn?t be able to tell who you are. Early Christian manifestations of the festival used disguise and ornamentation to fool the wandering spirits of the recently deceased, which were popularly believed to walk the earth until midnight on October 31 ? at which point the advent of All Saint?s Day (All Hallows) would banish them for eternity to the next world. The masks prevented vengeful souls from recognising their living enemies and wreaking havoc on them before they left.

Pretty spooky stuff ? though taken in the normal spirit of fun, Halloween celebrations can be ghoulishly enjoyable for all involved! As grandparents, it can be great to get involved in the costume making and even in chaperoning our little ghosts and goblins around the neighbourhood looking for treats. This tradition seems to have developed from an old English and Irish practice ? ?souling? ? in which poor children would offer to ward off the souls of the dead through song, in exchange for food.

The ?trick? part of the trick or treat activity is an almost always hollow threat. We all know that the words are a kind of formality: and when we take part in the ritual wholeheartedly it?s all good clean fun. Do be aware, though, that some tricksters take things a little more seriously. As a senior citizen the golden rule applies, even on a night when everyone is out knocking on doors ? if you don?t know who?s behind the mask, you don?t have to open the door.

There are plenty of other activities for grandparents and ?children suitable for Halloween fun ? ranging from traditional party games like apple bobbing to family specific traditions. Why not create your own Halloween party for your grandchildren and their friends? As long as you pay attention to some basic rules for safety at home, everyone can enjoy themselves hugely without having to wander the streets.

The first rule of safety at home on Halloween: never leave burning candles unattended (remember those pumpkin heads!); and don?t let the children play bobbing for apples ? in flour or water ? without a responsible adult present.

Make up your own activities for kids or stick to the classics. Help your grandchildren make the best Jack o Lantern ever (again, remember safety at home and don?t fail to supervise from start to finish). Enjoy some simple cooking with the pumpkin you remove. And keep a bowl of sweets by the door for the little imps who might come knocking?
